The department will reseed wild areas damaged by the effects of climate change.
The Department of the Interior invested $18 million into the new National Seed Strategy Keystone Initiative under the Inflation Reduction Act. The program, dedicated to collecting, producing, and procuring plant seeds native to the United States, builds on 25 years of research conducted by the department’s outdoor agencies and provides native seeds to local habitats that have experienced catastrophes created by climate change, such as wildfires, floods, and mudslides.
“A reliable, abundant, and diverse supply of native seeds is foundational to ensuring that the ecosystems we all cherish can thrive for current and future generations,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “The new initiative we are launching today… will help ensure we get the right seeds, in the right place, at the right time to restore our public lands and bolster climate resilience.”
